FSS® Information
What is the FSS®, and why is it important to the Entlebucher?
The American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service®, or FSS®, was developed to assist rare breed dog owners with the recording and tracking of rare breeds that currently cannot be registered with the AKC.
The FSS® provides a reliable record keeping service that allows purebred rare breed dog owners to focus on developing and improving the breed.
Once a rare breed has at least 150 dogs with three generation pedigrees registered in the FSS®, and an active breed club, they may be allowed to compete in some AKC sanctioned events such as Agility, Obedience, Tracking, and other AKC Performance events. While this doesn’t constitute AKC recognition, it is a way to compete in sanctioned AKC events.
When the FSS® has the minimum requisite number of dogs, with three generation pedigrees (300-400), the breed may become eligible for entry into the AKC’s Miscellaneous Class. There are other requirements, but none of them are triggered until the minimum number of dogs have been registered.
In order to help propel the Entlebucher towards AKC recognition, all EMDCA club members are asked to register their Entlebuchers with the FSS®. Further, the EMDCA also maintains its own Entlebucher registry. EMDCA members are able to obtain an EMDCA pedigree by providing a copy of their FSS® certificate, or any other acceptable foreign pedigree.
In summary, the EMDCA believes that the protection and prestige associated with full AKC recognition of the Entlebucher is of paramount importance to the survival of the breed in the United States. Therefore it is essential that its membership support the FSS® in any ways it can, up to and including informing others as to its function, registering their Entlebuchers (regardless of generation), and assisting with the maintenance of the EMDCA pedigree database for future submission to the AKC.
